Tala Upazila, Satkhira
For generations, the inhabitants of Jiwla Ghoshpara in Tala Upazila under Satkhira district relied on traditional dairy farming. However, due to the lack of modern waste management knowledge, cow dung accumulated everywhere, choking the village with foul odors and severe environmental pollution.
The Turning Point & Strategic Intervention:
Seeing the untapped potential, local NGO Unnayan Prochesta, in partnership with PKSF (under the SMART Project), took the initiative to reshape the community into a model eco-friendly village:
Modern Waste & Water Treatment: Connected drainage channels were installed alongside homesteads. Wastewater collects in designated filtering houses where, after multi-stage filtration, up to 90% purified water flows into local canals.
Capacity Building & Organic Fertilizer Production: Farmers received hands-on training and Thai earthworms to turn raw cow dung into high-grade Vermicompost, Tricho-Compost, and natural bio-pesticide Tricho-Leachate.
Rising Micro-Entrepreneurs & Economic Impact:
Moral Abdul Malek (Shivpur Village): Transformed his residence into a thriving bio-fertilizer production facility. He produces nearly 15,000 metric tons of vermicompost monthly, creating employment for local women. Major national fertilizer brands collect and package his compost for distribution across Bangladesh.
Kabir Hossain (Local Farmer): Replaced chemical fertilizers with vermicompost for his paddy and jute crops. His jute plants grew nearly 1.5 times taller with significantly thicker fiber, completely eliminating the need for extra chemical inputs.
Iman Ali (Nursery Owner): "After applying a bag of this organic compost, it felt as if the soil itself started breathing life again."
Leadership Perspective:
"When we visited Jiwla, we saw traditional cattle rearers living amidst heaps of untreated manure. We trained them in modern waste management and provided Thai earthworms. Today, farmers not only enjoy a clean, hygienic environment, but they are also earning substantial profits from selling waste manure."
— Mohammad Abdul Karim / Executive Leadership, PKSF
Conclusion:
Today, Jiwla Ghoshpara stands as a beacon of sustainable transformation—where waste is converted into 'organic gold', milk farmers receive fair prices, and the community achieves both environmental resilience and economic empowerment.
